Citizen Convention on ChatGPT (Sciences Po Aix)

Facilitation & communities AI in public services

What can I learn?

A university citizens' convention on generative AI, run at Sciences Po Aix-en-Provence from March to May 2025, bringing together teachers, students and administrative staff. Participants deliberated together and submitted proposals to management on training and teaching in the age of AI.

Core insight

An institution can decide how to live with generative AI democratically: rather than imposing a top-down policy, it can convene the people affected to deliberate and shape the rules together.

How to use it in daily work

A model for deliberative, bottom-up decision-making about AI inside an organisation — relevant when a school, library or service is wondering how to handle generative tools.

  • Point a school or organisation grappling with ChatGPT toward a convention-style process instead of an immediate ban or free-for-all.
  • Use the convention as an example of involving the whole community in AI policy rather than leaving it to management alone.
